Meet Mick 👋 Our Commercial Finance Manager
At InterMed, we’re proud to showcase the talented people who bring both expertise and passion to their work. This month, we’re highlighting Mick, our Commercial Finance Manager.
Since joining almost two years ago, Mick has been instrumental in supporting both our New Zealand and Australian operations. From leading the Finance Team and ensuring the business runs smoothly, to identifying opportunities for improvement, Mick’s focus is always on adding value.
Outside of work, he’s often out cycling, paddle-boarding, or tackling one of New Zealand’s Great Walks.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your role within InterMed?
I originally joined InterMed to help with a large acquisition having recently arrived in New Zealand from the United Kingdom. This gave me a good introduction to the company, and I then had the opportunity to permanently join InterMed and help lead the Finance Team. The team was already established with good knowledge of the business and their roles. They have really helped me to settle in and now we are looking to improve what we do.
How long have you worked at InterMed?
Just under 2 years
What does a typical day as Commercial Finance Manager look like?
I am fortunate as my role is varied, working across Australia and New Zealand, and I get involved in much of what is going on in the business, either directly or indirectly. Primarily I am trying to support the business, so firstly I will make sure that we are paying our suppliers and our staff on time. Then I will provide the management and sales teams with the information they need and review new customers, sales and stock. I also ensure that all our business dealings follow the proper processes and have the correct approvals. In addition, as a Finance Team we are looking at ways to improve our processes, so I am involved with that too.
What advice can you offer to other Commercial Finance Managers who are just starting?
Be yourself, after that qualifications and experience are important.
What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever been given?
Time is our most precious resource.
Tell us about a professional success story that you’re proud of.
No achievement in my professional career gives me more pride than bringing out the best in other people and helping to develop their careers. I can think of a few times when I have trained members of my team to take over my role or at least part of it.
What are your favourite things about working at InterMed?
We have great people, great products and there is always something new happening which makes working at InterMed enjoyable and interesting place to work.
What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?
Always keep an open mind
How do you like to spend your time when you aren’t working?
I like to travel and to be outdoors, cycling, walking, paddle-boarding and open water swimming. Best of all, my wife shares those interests, so it is a great way to make memories, and we have met some truly inspirational people along the way. Even though life can get busy I also make time to go to Church on a Sunday.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Speak a foreign language
How do you define success?Â
Knowing I have done the best I can for the right reasons
What’s one thing on your bucket list?
I have a list of some of New Zealand’s Cycle Trails and Great Hikes which I am trying to tick off, as well as a few in Australia.
